The Awardee of The Third Hong Kong Humanity Award - Dr CHUNG Wai-ling, Margaret




For the previous 20 years, Dr Chung Wai-ling Margaret has been actively engaged in voluntary charity and social services as well as rehabilitation services. Dr Chung suffered from Systemic Lupus Erythematosus after obtaining her Doctoral degree in 1987. Her illness forced her to give up her profession as Document Examiner. Dr Chung was not depressed by the illness, but kept on influencing other patients by maintaining a positive attitude towards life and caring for the health of her companions.

Dr Chung has initiated and launched patient support groups since 1989 and established the Regeneration Society in 1991 so as to comfort and alleviate the hardship of those with chronic diseases, respect their basic human dignity and disseminate the positive attitude towards illnesses. Besides caring the physical health of patients and providing them with rehabilitation services, Dr Chung cares for their mental health and launched the “Ten Outstanding Warriors of Regeneration” in 1996 to recognize the stoicism of chronically-ill patients for their strength in overcoming adversity. The award would encourage all people to stay positive in turmoil of life. In recent years, Dr Chung and other ardent supporters havebeen working on the establishment of Regeneration Charity Fund for developing integrated service centres and mobile centres – Regen Stations in all the 18 districts of Hong Kong to serve for health care, rehabilitation and pain relief so as to sustain the concept of “Regeneration” and to advocate preventive medicine in the community and improve the holistic health and quality of life of Hong Kong people. Dr Chung said, “My biggest wish is that everyone will stay healthy and happy, finishing their life without suffering.”

Besides contribution in the Regeneration Society, Dr Chung was the co-founder of Alliance of Patient Mutual Help Organizations, Hong Kong Arthritis & Rheumatism Foundation and Kwong Wah Hospital Patients’ Self Help Group for Pain Relieve etc. Further, Dr Chung is also eager in addressing the local public health policies, services and issues for the greater good of the Hong Kong communities. She has been the Board member of Hospital Authority, Rehabilitation Advisory Committee of Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) and Member of Health & Medical Development Advisory Committee of Government of HKSAR etc.
