China Flood 2018: Work Report 2

Since the monsoon season started this year, continuous rainstorms, hailstorms, typhoons and other adverse weather have caused widespread floods in China. At least 10 provinces (municipality, autonomous region), including Sichuan, Gansu, Jiangxi, Guizhou, Shaanxi, Zhejiang and Guangdong are affected by floods. According to information provided by the Ministry of Civil Affairs, more than 50 million people were affected, over 2 million people were evacuated, more than 200 people were reported killed, over 50 people were still missing, at least 20,000 houses were damaged. Direct economic losses amounted to more than RMB 50 billion.

Hong Kong Red Cross Actions
The Hong Kong Red Cross (HKRC) has been monitoring the situation since the beginning of the monsoon season. In July 2018, we mobilized 500 prepositioned family kits at Chongqing to support the flood-affected population. Moreover, rice worth RMB 580,000 was purchased and distributed to the affected community in Anhui and Shandong. A total of about 34,200 people were benefited from three disaster relief operations.

From July to October 2018, HKRC deployed in total 8 persons-times of our relief officers to Chongqing, Guangdong, Shandong and Anhui. They conducted assessment on humanitarian impact from the floods to the most vulnerable and on-site monitoring for relief distributions

Red Cross Actions
In response to floods and typhoons in China, the International Red Cross has mobilized approximately HKD 2.9 million from their Disaster Relief Emergency Fund (DREF) for the humanitarian needs in Sichuan and Gansu.

Since June, the Red Cross Society of China (RCSC) has mobilized relief items including family kits, blankets, folding bed and emergency fund to areas affected by flooding such as Guizhou, Sichuan, Gansu, Fujian and Chongqing, with a total value of more than RMB 10 million. Their emergency response teams have been deployed to support relief items distribution in those affected provinces.
