2012 Hong Kong Humanity Award
Recognize Five Outstanding Awardees for living out Power of Humanity

Five outstanding individuals are awarded the 2012 Hong Kong Humanity Award in recognition of their long term contributions to humanity through serving the vulnerable.

The awardees receiving tribute at the award presentation ceremony are (in alphabetical order of surname):-

  • Mr KO Chi-kin, Derek – helping people with disabilities to explore their talents and gain dignity by participating in sports and adventure activities, and to live life to the full; promoting social integration of people with and without disabilities.
  • Mr LAU Tat-keung, Gregory – persuading people out of committing suicide in his secondary duty for the Police Negotiation Cadre as a negotiator; promoting suicide prevention message across Hong Kong.
  • Dr LEUNG Tze-ching, Vincent – launching a series of infant health care programmes; providing neonatal resuscitation training for doctors in deprived areas in the Mainland.
  • Rev Thomas Anthony PEYTON – offering visits and care to prisoners, people with mental illness, the elderly, the impoverished and even those suffering from leprosy living in remote rural areas in the Mainland.
  • Ms WONG Wai-fun, Fermi– serving people from ethnic minorities; campaigning for eliminating racial discrimination in Hong Kong.

By voluntarily serving people in need without any desire for personal gain, the humanitarian deeds of the awardees are in unison with the mission of HKRC: “protect human life, care for the health of the vulnerable and respect human dignity”.

Addressing the ceremony, Mr Vincent Lo, BBS, JP, Deputy Chairman of HKRC, said “Man appears to be fragile when facing sickness and disasters. However if all of us can lend our hands to the needy, we can brighten up the world.”

He congratulated the awardees, “This Award acknowledges your fruition in humanity. Yet the Award also put expectations and responsibilities onto you – to continue devoting to humanitarian work, and to promote humanitarianism to all walks of life, so that more in need can get their helping hands.”

Mr Tai Keen-man, Deputy Director of Broadcasting (Programmes), said as a selection panel member, he was honoured to meet a number of candidates with varied background, from varied professions, yet equally determined in their humanitarian work. “I am touched by their positive energy. Being a public service broadcaster, RTHK will try our very best to disseminate, through airwaves, such positive energy. For instance, RTHK will later broadcast the essence of today’s ceremony. Through the humanity endeavors of the awardees, our audience will learn more about humanity spirit. It is hoped that more Hong Kong people will thus be encouraged to participate in various humanity tasks.”

On behalf of the organizers, Mr Lo also thanked the Selection Panel for their tough job in selecting the humanity models. The panel is chaired by The Hon Mr Justice Patrick Chan, Permanent Judge, The Court of Final Appeal. The other members are: Mr Lee Ming-kwai, GBS, QPM, CPM ( Former Commissioner of Police), Mr So Wai-sang (Awardee of The First Hong Kong Humanity Award), Mr Tai Keen-man (Deputy Director of Broadcasting (Programmes)), Mr Luke S K Wong (Director of HKRC) and Professor Angelina Yuen, BBS, JP (Vice President (Institutional Advancement and Partnership), The Hong Kong Polytechnic University).
