Introduction The Hong Kong Red Cross Special Education Service started in 1954 with the establishment of the first Hospital School that aimed at providing educational service to the sick children, who receive treatment and rehabilitation at hospitals. After years of endeavour, Hospital Schools have expanded to 18 locations over the territory. The other three Red Cross schools, Hong Kong Red Cross Princess Alexandra School, Hong Kong Red Cross John F. Kennedy Centre and Hong Kong Red Cross Margaret Trench School, provide rehabilitation and education for children with neurological and physical handicaps who have difficulties in adapting to the facilities and environment of mainstream school. All students must first be diagnosed by doctors and therapists and then referred by the Education Bureau to the Hong Kong Red Cross schools. Hong Kong Red Cross Shun Lee Hostel was first set up in 1968 at Tsz Wan Shan to serve disabled youths and was relocated to Shun Lee Estate in 1981. It provides residential service for the mentally handicapped people. It is through daily living, work skill and social trainings to enhance their integration in the society, thus, gaining self-respect. All Hong Kong Red Cross schools are encouraged to initiate new ideas while striving to maintain the high professional standard of education. Hong Kong Red Cross Hospital Schools provide group and bedside teaching and have extended their service to home-based teaching. Hong Kong Red Cross Princess Alexandra School, while providing a spectrum of curricula for physically handicapped students with average intelligence, has remained the only special school that offers seven-day boarding service. Hong Kong Red Cross Margaret Trench School has accumulated years of experience in addressing the various curricular needs of students with multiple disabilities. Hong Kong Red Cross John F. Kennedy Centre has been introducing innovative approaches to address the educational needs of students with increasing complexity of disabilities.
