Press Release
HKRC 5-year commitment to serve disabled persons in China signified in Beijing

(Hong Kong, 10 Sept 2008)  Since the 5.12 earthquake in Sichuan, many people become disabled which make their plight of recovery and resuming their normal daily life even harder. In view of this, Hong Kong Red Cross decides to provide long-term support to such disabled persons to facilitate their recovery.

Today the Hong Kong Red Cross pledges our commitment to the Red Cross Society of China and the China Disabled Persons’ Federation in Beijing, for providing funding of about RMB50 million as the setup and 5-year-running cost of the “Deyang Disabled Person’s Federation, Hong Kong Red Cross Rehabilitation, Prosthetic and Orthotic Centre” (the Centre) and provision of technical support in it.

The Centre aims at providing all-round and free comprehensive rehabilitation services, including prosthesis installation, repairment, recovery, physical therapy, occupational therapy, psychological support and recovery, community integration and vocational training etc., to help the earthquake affected people to re-establish their self-reliance and working ability, so as to further enhance their sense of dignity.  The Centre has served more than 70 patients up to now, and may consider extending the service to cover the needy people lived in Guangyuan city, Mianyang city and part of Abazhou.
