Press Release
HK Red Cross Raised HK$620 million donation Invited Independent Auditing Firm for Consultancy

(Hong Kong.26 May 2008.8:00pm) As of 26th May, Hong Kong Red Cross (HKRC) raised HK$620 million donation. Such amount of donation is the highest record the HKRC encountered in such a short period of time since the establishment of HKRC in 1950. In order to increase the accountability and transparency, the HKRC invited an independent auditing firm to perform a review of the processes, authorisation and planned controls over the collection, safeguarding and disbursement of donation funds with respect to the “China Relief Fund” to advise the Agency to perform and sustain a more reputed management system for the relief fund

Distribution

Red Cross staff are still stationing in Sichuan for procurement and distribution of relief items. Apart from the 2,000 tents and 20,000 quilts we sent to affected area in the past weeks, we have purchased additional 1,500 tents and 15,000 quilts, and such items will be transported to the affected area shortly. Our staff are working hand in hand with the local Red Cross people on site.

Psychological Support Service
In Hong Kong, the earthquake disaster also creates some psychological disturbance to our local people. In view of this, the HKRC has set up a “Psychological Support Hotline 2802-0021” starting from tonight; the service hour is from Monday to Friday 6:00pm–10:00pm. In addition, a useful self-learning checklist and guideline has been uploaded onto the HKRC webpage www.redcross.org.hk for parents and teachers to identify their kids who may suffer from disquiet because of the disaster.
