(Hong Kong.21 May 2008.8:00pm) The Sichuan earthquake relief operation has been lasted for 10 days. Apart from purchasing and distribution of relief materials, Hong Kong Red Cross (HKRC) is now focusing on restoring the medical and health service in the disaster areas.
Planning to set up temporary hospital
Since many hospitals were collapsed or turned into dangerous condition by the earthquake, almost all the patients have to be moved to outdoor temporary shelters for treatment. This situation is expected to be lasted in the short future. In view of this, the Hong Kong Red Cross is going to support the hospitals in Mianzhu (綿竹) district and its peripheral areas in setting up several temporary hospitals, estimated at least 100,000 affected population can be served. Meanwhile, the HKRC will also cooperate with the local counterpart to organize mobile medical teams, serving the remote areas for the victims who suffer from injury or fracture and are unable to visit the nearby hospital.
Keep distributing relief materials
The HKRC staff are still working in the affected area in Sichuan and Shanxi, to assess the needs and purchasing relief items for the affected people. 1,000 tents and 10,000 quilts will be transported to the seriously-hit areas shortly. Another 1,000 tents and 10,000 quilts will also be sent out within next week.
