Hong Kong Red Cross John F. Kennedy Centre
50th Anniversary Golden Jubilee Celebration

(Hong Kong.2 December 2017) Established in 1967, the Hong Kong Red Cross John F. Kennedy Centre (JFKC) has been endeavored to offer all-rounded education and rehabilitation services to students with physical handicap and sickness for 50 years. JFKC also provided quality holistic education to help students develop their self-awareness, equip with living skills, broaden their horizons, establish the art of virtue in oneself to inspire others and integrate into the community, thus enabling them to attain a positive and fruitful life.

Addressing the golden jubilee anniversary ceremony today, The Hon Mrs. Carrie Lam, the Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administration Region cum Patron of the Hong Kong Red Cross (HKRC) said the HKRC helps students know more about the value of life with humanitarian spirit, and the JFKC offers different opportunities to students through cooperating with various parties. She also mentioned that the government will provide extra resources to education sector and special schools so they can offer quality education to students with special needs. The government will also increase internship vacancies to candidates with special needs in order to help create job opportunities for them.

Mrs. Ivy Wu, JP, Chairman of the HKRC mentioned in her speech that, with the collective efforts and supports from the HKSAR government and all stakeholders, the HKRC special education and rehabilitation service has evolved from a single hospital school to nowadays a total of 18 hospital schools and three special schools for students with physical disabilities, “The HKRC has been closely collaborated with nine HKSAR Government Bureaux and 20 government departments to provide different kinds of humanitarian services for the general public. Taking this opportunity, I would like to extend our sincere gratitude for the continued support from our teachers, staff, parents and various sectors of the society.”

In the past half century, JFKC has made significant contributions to the special education of Hong Kong, Mr. Grandy Lui, Supervisor of JFKC, expressed in his welcoming remarks that, “Upholding the spirit of humanity, the JFKC is committed to offer mainstream curriculum education and appropriate caring services, ranging from teaching, therapeutic and boarding services, for children with special needs. To cater for their diverse needs, the JFKC put great efforts in exploring a wide range of pilot teaching method and has achieved a fruitful result in parent-school collaboration.” Mr. Lui wishes all staff and students to keep up their efforts and work together for unleashing student’s potentials in the years ahead.

JFKC is a special school which aims to provide comprehensive services for physical disabled students especially those suffering from Cerebral Palsy, Muscular dystrophy, Spinal Muscular Atrophy, Orthopaedic Disease and Paraplegia related to spinal cord disease etc. JFKC has been a pioneer in various aspects of special education in the territory. It is the first special school introducing “Conductive Education” from Hungary and using computer technology in teaching and learning. To meet the needs of students and the society, JFKC also introduced physical education subject and matriculation class in its curriculum. In addition, it is the first special school admitting 24-hour ventilator-assisted students. Over the years, JFKC has made remarkable achievement in academic, sports and arts as well as the holistic education for physically handicapped children in Hong Kong.

Looking to the future, HKRC and JFKC will continue providing quality services to children with special needs by actively exploring different opportunities for them, enhance the collaborations with various sectors of the society, and upholding humanitarian spirit, so those children can attain a fruitful life.

About the Hong Kong Red Cross John F. Kennedy Centre
The Hong Kong Red Cross John F. Kennedy Centre is special school under The Hong Kong Red Cross and is subsidized by Hong Kong Government. It offers education with full stream curriculum and provides therapeutic, nursing and boarding services for those disabled children aged from six. The Centre was founded in 1967, at present, there are 7 classes in the Primary Section and 11 classes in the Secondary Section. For boarding, there are 77 five-day places and 33 seven-day places. The Centre becomes a holistic special school ranging from primary to secondary classes, providing mainstream curricula from Primary 1 to Matriculation as well as Foundation Curricula for the mentally retarded.
