5.12 Sichuan Earthquake Four-Year-On An 8-magnitude earthquake struck Sichuan Province on 12 May 2008, destroyed countless homes. The Hong Kong Red Cross (HKRC) received donation over $1.3 billion from the general public. The HKRC has been teaming up with the affected people to rebuild their homes zealously in the past four years. To this day, over 99% of the hardware, about 14,900 structures in disaster areas, including village houses, schools, health facilities and elderly home, are rebuilt. Over 1.2 million of people are benefited. The completion of hardware reconstruction marks the commencement of another phase of disaster preparedness programmes. In this phase, the HKRC focuses on livelihood recovery and disaster preparedness programmes at community level, in order to enhance community resilience to future disasters. There is a still long way for the earthquake-affected communities to fully recover. However, the HKRC promises to walk with them side by side.
