
Red Cross continuous supporting medical work in earthquake affected areas
(Hong Kong.19 May 2008.8:00 pm) The Hong Kong Red Cross medical professional volunteer team of 6 had finished the initial stage medical supporting work at disaster areas frontline level, and is now conducting further need assessment in the areas of medical facilities, drinking water and rehabilitation. In addition, other workers in the fields are concentrating on the procurement & distribution relief items such as tents, food, clothing and quilts to the affected people. 2,000 large tents are on the pipeline transporting to the affected area.
‘After long distance walking, most of the wounded victims in the medical station were suffering from dehydration, hunger, or with heat-stroke and minor trauma syndrome’, said Dr Pak Chuen Yuen, one of the six medical professional team members. “According to an initial observation, there is no sign of epidemic and infectious diseases happened in the disaster area, but the hygiene situation is still needed to be concerned.”
Meanwhile, two more teams from the Hong Kong Red Cross have been sent to Cheng County (成縣), Tian Shui City (天水市)and Wudu Region (武都區), Longnan City (隴南市) in Gansu (甘肅) province, and Lueyang County (略陽縣) and Ningqiang County (寧強縣) in Hanzhong city (漢中市), Shannxi (山西)province to assess the disaster situation and distribute relief materials.
