HKRC personnel arrived disaster affected area
(Hong Kong．13 May 2008．7:00pm) Two Hong Kong Red Cross assessment teams arrived the disaster affected area this morning and tonight respectively for assessing the disaster situation and assisting the handling of our relief donation from HKRC amounting RMB500,000.
Hong Kong Red Cross sent out the first relief team to the worst-hit area – Beichuan county. According to latest figures, over 80% of houses in Beichuan have been destroyed. The second assessment team will arrive Sichuan tonight to support implementation of the relief operation.
Action of Red Cross Society of China
The Red Cross Society of China (RCSC) Headquarters has transported relief items including over 500 tents and 2,500 quilts valued RMB 780,000 to the affected area. Moreover, Chongqing Red Cross has also proceeded toward Liangping county to distribute drinking water, relief food and tents to the affected people. Gansu Red Cross has allocated RMB300,000 to provide food, medicine and quilts to Longnan, Qingyang, Pingliang, Tianshui and Gannan. In addition, 3000 quilts and 200 tons of flour are ready to be transported to the affected area. As of 13 May 14:00pm, the RCSC has received donation in cash and kind amounting RMB 65 million from communities for Sichuan Earthquake affected area.
Hong Kong Red Cross appeals to the Hong Kong community for their generous donation to support our relief, reconstruction and disaster preparedness operations in the affected area.
